2017 FIAT 124 Spider at Thomson Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram FIAT

The all-new 2017 Fiat 124 Spider comes back on the scene with its iconic Italian style after almost 50 years since its original introduction. The renowned Pininfarina design house designed the original body in the 1966, and that tradition continues today as the 2017 Spider was designed at Centro Stile in Turin, Italy, who have faithfully incorporated classic and modern into one truly appealing car. The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider is a two-seat sports car, with a slightly bigger trunk than the similar Mazda Miata, well-calibrated performance ratios and is offered in three trim levels: Classica, Lusso and Abarth.

Under the 124 Spider’s Hood

The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider is available with the established 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder engine. Most enthusiasts should already know it’s rear-wheel-drive before they jump in the driver’s seat for that fun first drive. Especially since the engine obtains up to 164 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, and is available with a six-speed manual or six-speed auto transmission. Fuel economy per the EPA is 30 mpg combined (26 city/35 highway) with manual transmission, and the automatic Spider sees 29 mpg combined (25 city/36 highway). The 124 Spider’s suspension uses a double-wishbone layout in front and a multi-link in the back, intentionally focused on tuning improvements for greater stability while braking and turning. Steering works easily with an electric power assist (dual pinion) system.

Design of FIAT 124 Spider

With a nod to the original styling, there is a hexagonal upper grille and grille pattern, a striking horizontal rear lamp, and those well-known “power domes” on the front hood. The interior is crafted to subtly focus on the occupants, with quality soft-touch materials throughout. The driving experience is known to be paramount for this vehicle, and the inside layout kept that in mind with straightforward and clear operation of the steering wheel, pedals and shifter. The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider is available in three trim levels: Classica, Lusso and Abarth. Seven exterior paint colors are available. Standard features on the base Classica include 16-inch alloy wheels, a manually retractable soft top with glass window, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and a six-speaker sound system. Leveling up to the Lusso adds 17-inch wheels, automatic headlights, foglights, automatic climate control, and heated seats. The Abarth adds to the Lusso trim with different exterior and interior trim, quad exhaust tips, a limited-slip rear differential, and a sport-tuned suspension. Compared to the Miata, both fabric and leather upholsteries are more of a premium grade, another difference that increases the distance from its cousin, in that no exterior body panelling is the same and it has a completely different engine as well. It’s also available with, for some owners essential, tech features including the FIAT Connect 7.0 system with 7-inch touchscreen display, multimedia control, Bluetooth, heated seats and Keyless Enter ‘n Go. A Bose premium sound system with nine speakers, including dual headrest speakers, is also available for superior sound quality even with the top down. Noise vibration and harshness (NVH) enhancements are certainly a strong focus with this revival as well. An up-to 2-3 dB noise reduction can come from including an acoustic front windshield, and Fiat has done that here, plus performed several sound-deadening insulation treatments for a more enjoyably quiet highway ride.

What’s the MPG highway with this vehicle?

Adding so many of this century’s perks to the drive really sweetens the mix for all drivers of the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider. Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, side airbags and stability and traction control. A rearview camera is available on all trims. For the Lusso and Abarth, the ‘Safety and Comfort’ package includes auto-dimming mirrors, heated exterior mirrors, a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors.
