2018 Jeep Renegade vs 2018 Chevrolet Trax near Augusta, GA

An SUV can be the perfect addition to any household, especially if you’re looking for a vehicle that combines entertainment with capability. Each SUV segment has its strengths, and the subcompact SUV class seems to have the most options out there for you to choose from. But those amount of options can be overwhelming, especially if you want the very best that the segment has to offer. That’s why we’ve chosen the 2018 Jeep Renegade and the 2018 Chevrolet Trax as two of the best representatives of the segment. The Renegade, in the 2018 model year, has made a rearview camera standard, along with a 6-speaker audio system. Jeep has also upgraded the touchscreens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2018 Trax doesn’t receive many updates, and only really changes the MyLink infotainment system by upgrading it. In order to figure out which of these options is the one that you should be driving home, keep reading down below.

2018 Jeep Renegade Power & Handling

The Jeep Renegade gives you the ability to enjoy a quiet drive on the road, and then switch to off-road mode on the weekends. This is accomplished through two powertrain configurations. The first of which is a turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder, which is matched with a six-speed manual transmission. This system will get you around 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Two-wheel drive is standard, however, you can opt for four-wheel drive. The second engine is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, that matches itself with a nine-speed automatic transmission. You’ll get around 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque with this system. Two-wheel and four-wheel drive are both available. The biggest perk of this second engine is you can tow up to 2,000 pounds if you choose four-wheel drive.

2018 Chevrolet Trax Power & Handling

The Trax, while coming with a nice standard engine, is only available with that singular engine. This turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder can produce up to 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. The transmission it is matched with is a six-speed automatic transmission, which helps with responsiveness, power, and even fuel economy. You can also get either front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The engine isn’t bad, but if you want something with a bigger boost then you’ll be out of luck.

2018 Jeep Renegade Features & Design

Not only does the Renegade come with two engine options, but you’ll also find four models in the Renegade lineup. The first of these is known as the Sport, and will give you features like 16-inch steel wheels, remote locking and unlocking, power windows and locks, a height-adjustable driver seat, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, a removable cargo floor panel, a driver information display, a 5-inch touchscreen, a USB port, manually adjustable mirrors, push-button ignition, a rearview camera, a fold-flat front passenger seat, cloth upholstery, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth, and a 6-speaker sound system. If you’re looking for something that’s more off-road focused, then you’ll want the Trailhawk. This model comes with hill descent control, unique exterior and interior accents, an upgraded information display, a raised suspension, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and underbody skid plates. The highest option, the Limited, gives you more luxurious features like heated front seats, keyless ignition and entry, a heated steering wheel, dual exhaust tips, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and leather upholstery.

2018 Chevrolet Trax Features & Design

The Trax, like the one engine it offers, falls short with only three available model options in the lineup. This includes the base trim LS, which offers 16-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, air-conditioning, Chevy’s MyLink infotainment system, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a rearview camera, a 7-inch touchscreen interface, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Moving up a model will get you the LT, which comes with a 110-volt outlet, roof rails, LED tail lights, cruise control, LED daytime running lights, satellite radio, heated mirrors, and remote vehicle start. The highest option, Premier, includes fog lights, full simulated leather upholstery, forward collision alert, 18-inch wheels, heated front seats, and lane departure warning. More features can be added through packages, but the packages don’t make up for the extra model that comes with the Renegade.

Conclusions

While both SUVs have their strengths, the Renegade out-muscles the Trax easily. The 2018 Renegade simply has too many options, especially when it comes to off-roading fun. There truly is nothing that this SUV can’t do, while the Trax has some glaring issues that make it a one-note SUV.
