Ram 1500 owners know that they own a well-equipped, dependable truck that they can rely on. However, no matter how well-equipped a truck is, they all need routine maintenance. Keeping up with your truck’s routine maintenance schedule is a way to thank your truck for all its hard work, and it repays you by continuing that hard work. Here at Thomson Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we want to help you give your Ram 1500 the care it deserves. Continue reading below for a detailed outline of the maintenance services to perform as your odometer reading climbs.
8,000-mile service
At approximately 8,000 miles, Ram recommends getting your truckās first service if it is used for daily driving and occasional light towing. However, if you use your Ram 1500 for heavy hauling or off-roading, you should probably bring the truck in for its first service at around 5,000 or 6,000 miles, as these activities put more strain on your truck. The first maintenance appointment should consist of two primary services. First is an oil change. With every oil change, the oil filter should be replaced to ensure the new oil doesnāt become contaminated. In addition to an oil change, the tires should also be rotated to prevent premature uneven tire wear. Moving forward, these services should happen every 5,000 to 8,000 miles, depending on how you use the truck.
20,000-mile service
Between the truckās 8,000-mile and 20,000-mile service, youāll likely have gotten one oil change or more, depending on usage. Near 20,000 miles, a few more things should be looked at. First is the engine air filter. This component prevents road debris and dirt from entering the engine, providing clean air to be mixed with fuel. If this becomes clogged, it wonāt do its job to the best of its ability and will cause the engine to work harder, decreasing fuel efficiency. Additionally, the suspension, steering, and braking systems should be checked for any wear, damage, or malfunctions.
40,000 mile service
After a couple more oil changes, at 40,000 miles, some of the more critical components should be inspected. This includes the spark plugs, which can become contaminated with carbon and begin to fail. Our technicians also recommend checking the CV joints and axles to ensure there is no loose fluid, as this is a sign of a leak. Additionally, the transfer case should be inspected for leaks, and the condition of the gearbox fluid should be checked.
60,000-mile service and beyond
When your truck passes the 60,000-mile mark, caring for it becomes a bit more intensive. Around 60,000 miles, the 20,000 and 30,000-mile services should be performed again, including the air filter and the steering, suspension, and braking systems. If the spark plugs have not yet been replaced, they should be done at this service appointment. After 60,000 miles, as your truck creeps up on 100,000 miles, the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve should be inspected. The PCV valve recycles waste gases from the crankcase, where the engine oil is stored, to the air intake to be mixed with fuel and burned instead of emitting them out of the tailpipe. This valve can begin to show signs of wear around the 100,000-mile mark, so this would be an excellent time to inspect and replace it if necessary.
